I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, SS will be able to understand the conversation between Mai and Tom and do the tasks well. They will be able to name the continents.

- Introduce Mai and Tom and explains that “What nice photos” is an exclamation to express that you like the photos.
- Ask SS what the conversation might be about.
- Look at the picture in the textbook and answer the questions.

- Name the cities in the photos and ask them to support their answer.
- Play the recording. SS listen then practice in pairs.
- Practice aloud.
- Correct if any mistakes of pronunciation.
- Introduce some model sentences.

- Look at the photos and the conversation to find the answer.
- Allow SS to share their answer before discussing as a class.
- Support their answer.
- Work in pairs to complete this task.
- Look at the map and practice saying the continent names with their partner.
- Ask them the Vietnamese translations of these names.
- Write “Asia, Viet Nam, Hue, Ha Noi, Thong Nhat Palace” on the board. Ask SS which is the continent, which is the country, which is the city, which is the capital and which is the place of interest.
- Give examples of Britain.
- Do the matching and give feedback. Practice saying the words with SS. Ask them to locate the places on the map/ globe.

UNIT 9: CITIES OF THE WORLD
A CLOSER LOOK 1
I. OBJECTIVES
By the end of this lesson, SS will be able to pronounce the sounds /әu/ and /ai/ correctly in isolation and in context. They will be able to use vocabulary and structures to describe cities and landmarks.
1. Knowledge: Structure: The superlative of long adjectives. 
2. Skills: SS will be able to do exercises correctly.
 They will be able to pronounce sounds correctly.
3. Attitudes: Students are hard-working and attentive. 
4. Competences: SS will develop some competences such as being determined, self-studying, creative and communicating. They will use language correctly.

III. PROCEDURES
1. Warm up: (5’) - SS read the conversation and answer the questions.
? How did Tom describe the three cities? What did he talk about? Which adjectives dis he use?
- T comments and gives marks.
2. New lesson: (35’)

Language focus
- SS may already know some of the adjectives in the activity so first ask them to match the words they know.
- Allow SS to work together. T prepares some larger size papers for groups to match. Point out that some adjectives in the left column may have more than one opposite in the right column.
- Take answer of some groups and give feedback.
- Have SS practice reading the adjectives.
- Have SS work in groups of ten SS. Ask them to write their answer on a large size paper in 10 minutes. Tell them that they can use the words in 1. Encourage SS to add other adjectives.
- Check all the answers of groups. Any groups with the most correct answer will be the winner.
- Practice the sounds as the model. 
- Practice together.
- Model the two sounds with “cold” and “sky”.
- Let SS see how the sounds are formed. Ask SS to give more words that have two sounds. (Divide the whole class into 2 teams). T controls the game. 
- Play the recording and asks SS to listen and fill in the suitable column. Play the recording as many times as necessary.
- Write the answer on the board. Then listen again and check.
- Repeat the sounds as a class.
- Have SS practice reading the words in bold first. Ask them to say if the word has an /әu/ or /ai/ sound. Play the recording as many times as necessary. 
- Have SS repeat the sentences. 
- Provide further practice by dividing the class into 2 groups. Have groups read alternate lines.
- Give comments.
- Introduce the superlatives of long adjectives.

- Let SS have a quick look at all the pictures. Ask SS to work individually to complete the fact sheet, using one of the pictures provided.
- Have SS work in pairs to compare the answer. Ask them to discuss whether they agree with each other’s answers. If they do not agree with the answers, encourage them to give reasons. Do not give corrective feedback at this stage. 
- Set a time limit for this exercise. Ask SS to look at their earlier answer (and think about their discussions) in Ex5 to check if they are similar to what the text says.

- Divide the whole class into 2 teams. Ask them to make sentences that contain two sounds /әu/ and /ai/. If any group can write more correct sentences, they will be the winner.

- Do ex A1, B4 (P.16 – 17) in the workbook.

Language focus
- Recall what Tom told Mai about in the conversation in Getting started.
- Underline all the verbs in the present perfect tense. Use the grammar box to help you explain that present perfect is used to show that one has had or has never had this experience.
- Provide the form of the present perfect. Notice the past participle and the use of “ever”/ “never”.
- Do the task individually. Then share the answer with the partner.
- Give the answers.
- Correct.
- Remind SS that the present perfect is used to describe one’s experiences and it is not important to state exact time when they happened. Contrast this with the present simple which describes a repeated action or a truth, and adverbs of frequency when something happened are often mentioned.
- Have SS work on this exercise individually before they compare answer with each other. 
- Give their answers.
- Give feedback as a class discussion. 
- Elicit what there is in the phots by asking SS questions. Ask SS to provide verbs and their past participles.
- Have SS write the full sentences in their notebook, then in pairs take turns talking about what Tom has done this week.
- Talk about what they have done this week, using the present perfect.

Go around the class, asking the survey questions.
- SS move around and ask different classmates for different questions. SS shouldn’t ask the same person all the questions. When they have finished the survey, make a class poll by asking SS to report the results. Count the number of “yes” answer to each questions and find out what is the most SS have ever done, and the things that the least of them / or no one has done.

- Use the notes to work in pairs and tell each other about the city they choose in 5.
- Make sure they speak in full sentences.
- Have SS join another pairs to make groups of four and continuous their discussions. 
READING: Love from Sweden.
Pre – reading 
1. Look at the postcard. 
- Answer:
1. The photo is of Stockholm, Sweden.
2. The sender writer about his/ her stay in the city.
3. We send postcards to tell our family or friends that we are having a good time, but we still miss them and want to send some photos of the place where we are so that, although they cannot be with us there they can still see how beautiful it is.

8. Mai is feeling happy. She used the words such as “fantastic”, “perfect”, “amazing”, “too beautiful for words”.
