UNIT 14: MY FAVOURITE STORIES
Lesson 2: Period 1 (part 1 and 2)

I. Overview:
1. OBJECTIVES: 
-By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to pronounce correctly the sounds of the letters ow as in crow and that of the letters ow as in cowshed and to listen and read together correctly.
2. LANGUAGE FOCUS:
a. Phonics: crow, cowshed .
b. Vocabulary:
+ cowshed, ground.
3. TEACHING AIDS:
- Student Book : Tieng Anh 5, Unit 14, Page 29.
- Audio and visual aids: Recordings, flashcards, a large-sized sheet of paper for phonic .

I. Warm-up: 
- Tell story “ Little Red Riding Hood”
II. New lesson:
1. Listen and repeat.
- Have pupils to open their books on page 29.
- Stick the large- sized sheet of paper with this section written on it on the board.
- Tell pupils they are going to learn how to produce the sounds of the letters ow as in crow and those of the letters ow as in cowshed.
- Ask pupils to repeat: crow, cowshed.
- Play the recording twice. 
- Guide Ss practice reading crow, cowshed.
- Call on some Ss say the words in front of the class. T correct mistake(s).
- Have whole class read aloud the words.
 2. Listen and read together.
Before listening:
- Have pupils look at pictures in part 2. Ask Ss to read the dialogue.Tell them about the activitiy.
-Read the dialogue, pausing at times to check students’ comprehension.
- Teach the key words: cowshed, ground. Write the words on the board and get Ss to repeat them a few times.
- Say You are going to hear the dialogue and clap the words: one clap for the words with “ow” as in “snowy, know, slow, crow” and two claps for the words with “ow” as in “cowshed”.
- Model: read the poem, clapping: snowy (one clap), know( one clap), slow( one clap), crow( one clap), cowshed ( 2 claps). Group the words into two columns on the board corresponding to the number of claps.
- Get Ss to clap in the same way as you read the dialogue again.
- Then ask Ss to repeat each line of the chant.
- While listening:
- Play the recording.
- Play the recording again for Ss to clap at the focused words.
After listening:
- Have Ss work in groups read the passage and clap their hands.
- Feed back: Call out some groups read the dialogues in front of the class. T give remark and correct mistake(s).
 III. Follow-up:
- Have pupils repeat the chant once more clap at the focused words.

I. Warm up: 
- Read the chant on page 29 and clap the focus words.
II. New lesson:
3. Group and say aloud.
- Have pupils to open their book on page 29. Get Ss to read the instruction, the chart and the word box .Check if Ss understand the activities and the meaning of the focus words. Get Ss to repeat each word a few times. Do the first example with the class. 
- Set the time and let Ss do the task independently ( in five minutes).
- Let pupils check their answers in pairs.
- Call on some pupils to report answers and the others give comments.

- Have the whole class read in chorus all the words in each column to reinforce their pronunciation.
4. Listen and number:
- Get Ss to open their books on page 30and observe the characters and the sequence of the pictures. Elicit pupils’ comments on the details of the pictures.Tell them the purpose of listening: You are going tolisten to the story of a cat and a mouse. You should listen select and number the pictures.
- Pre teach the new vocabulary: hole, catch, keep, laugh.Get SS to repeat each word a few times.
- Play the recording twice: once for Ss to listen all the way through and once for them to do the task. Pause after each part to give Ss sufficient time to select and write the numbers.
- Replay the recording for Ss to check their answers.
- Get Ss to check their answers in pairs. Call on a few Ss to report their answers to the class. If there is disagreement on any answer, play the related part of the recording again.

5.Funtime 
- Line- up Story Game.
Materials: 3 sets of 10 pieces of paper.On each set, 10 words are written: hungry, ground, crow, cowshed, meat, beak, shook, lunch, clever, ran.
- T guides how to play a game:
- Ss play the game in 3 groups of ten. They are standing in a line. Each pupil in the two groups has one piece of paper with a particular word written on it. The teacher tells the story “ The clever Fox and the Crow”. While retelling the story, the teacher pauses at times for pupils of the two groups to prompt a missing word. When the teacher finishes the story telling, the group which has the most correct words wins the game.

II. New lesson:
1. Look listen and repeat.
- Have pupils to open their books on page 31 and look at the pictures. Point to each picture to elicit the names of the characters in each picture . Set the context: Nga and Phong are talking about the story “ The Clever Fox and the Crow”.Recall the familiar vocabulary and pre-teach the new word: tricky.Write the word on the board andget SS to repeat the word a few times.
- Read the texts in each picture, stop at times to check students’ comprehension.
- Play the recording for pupils to listen all the way through.
- Play the recording twice again for pupils to repeat sentence by sentence.
- Divide the class into two groups to take turns to say the words from nga and Phong. 
- Play the recording again for pupils to repeat to reinforce their pronunciation.
- Feed back.

- Ask Ss to read the example and elicit their prompts to complete the speech bubbles.

- Have pupils open the Student’s book on Page 32. Set the context: You are going to read the story of the Tortoise and the Hare and do the tasks that follow. Read the story, pausing at times to check pupils’comprehension. Teach vocabulary: fastest, race, “ Ready, steady, go”, pass, rest, fall asleep, win. Use a mixture of English and Vietnamese to get Ss to understand the words.Write the key words on the board and get Ss to repeat a few times.
- Have Ss work individually in five minutes read and do Task a. They are to read the words in each line in the left column and find that( those) which can go with them in the right column. Move around to monitor the activity.
- Have Ss check their answer in pairs.

- Ss work independently(in 5 minutes). 
 Remind SS to draft their writing before copying on to their note book.
- Go around the classroom to monitor the activity. 
- Call out some Ss to read their writing to the class. Get Ss to display their work
-Check up and praise Ss if they do well.
