Extension (optional)
• Ask the students to read the story again
• Then ask them to look at the pictures for a few minutes and close their books
• Say a few sentences (some correct and some incorrect) and ask the students to say yes or no
e.g. Teacher: The dog is on the bed.
Student 1: Yes!
Teacher: The dragon is on the clock.
Student 2: No! etc
1. Which animals are in the story? Colour (10mins)
• Point to the animals and ask students to name them
• Ask the students to say which animals appear in the story
• Ask them to colour those animals
WEEK 9 – GRADE 1 – STORY TIME (35 minutes) PERIOD 17 Objectives: To consolidate the sound of the letters Aa, Bb, Cc and Dd and the corresponding words Learn and practice reading skills Topic & Key language Resources & Materials Key Activities Integrated skills Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing Vocabulary Revision Ant, apple, alligator, acrobat Ball, bed, bee, bear Cat, carrot, clock, car Dog, drum, dragon, doll Resources i-Learn My Phonics Grade 1, pupil’s book – p.18 & 19 Materials Phonics cards CD Warm-up: Name it (5mins) Arrange some chairs, back to back, in the middle of the room Choose phonics cards and place them on the chairs Play a song (use a song from the previous units) When the music stops the students pick up a phonics card and, one at time, tell Teacher the name of the item pictured on their phonics card The student who gives an incorrect answer is out of the activity Play the activity as many times as necessary Revision & Practice Listen. Read along (Track 26) (10mins) (book closed) Tell the students that it’s story time. Ask them if they like reading stories and what their favourite story (or character) is Prepare phonics cards of these words: ant, bed, dog, cat, clock, dragon, drum Ask the students to read out the words Invite students to guess what they think the story is about (do not dismiss any ideas) Ask the students to open their books Ask them questions about what they can see in the pictures e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the dog in picture 1) Look! What’s this? Class: (It’s a) dog! Teacher: (pointing to the bed in picture 1) Yes! The dog is on the . Have the students come to the front of the classroom and act out the story Encourage them to have fun as they perform
