VIII.Reading comprehension. Read and give true or false statements On the morning of December 26th , 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake struck off the Northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The earthquake resulted from complex slip on the fault where the oceanic portion of the Indian Plate slides under Sumatra, part of the Eurasian Plate. The earthquake deformed the ocean floor, pushing the overlying water up into a tsunami wave. The tsunami wave devastated nearby areas where the wave may have been as high as 25 meters (80 feet) tall and killed nearly 300,000 people from nations in the region and tourists from around the world. Sumatra is an island off the Northwest coast of the Indonesian. There was heavy loss of life in the earthquake and tsunami which occurred in December 26th , 2004 . A tsunami is caused by the earthquake. Sumatra was completely destroyed by the tsunami. More than 300,000 people in the region were killed in the tidal wave. Read the following passage and answer the questions below: Almost a hundred thousand people were killed and half a million homes destroyed as a result of an earthquake in Tokyo in 1923. The earthquake began a minute before noon when the inhabitants of Tokyo were cooking their midday meals. Thousands of stoves were overturned as soon as the earth began to shake. As a result, small fires broke out everywhere and quickly spread. The fire enginenes were prevented from going to help because many of the roads had cracked open. It was impossible to use fire fighting equipment as most of the water pipes had burst. Consequently, over ninety percent of the damage cause by fire rather than by the collapse of the buildings. Most of those who died were not killed in the earthquake itself but in the fires which followed. 1. How many people were killed in the earthquake in Tokyo in 1923? 2. When did the earthquake begin? 3. What happened as soon as the earth began to shake? 4. Why were the fire engines prevented from going to help? 5. What was most of the damage caused by? Read and give true or false statements Every day on radio, on TV, and in the newspapers, we hear, see, or read about many problems in the world, for example, pollution problems. Air pollution is the first kind. It mostly comes from fumes released from factories. Also, waste is dumped anywhere, even in the city where many people are living. The second pollution problem is sea pollution. Many people earn their living from fishing in the sea, and the fish they catch feed many people . But the sea has become so polluted from oil sprills and factory wastes that the fish are dying. This problem is not only killing the fish, but is also affecting those people who eat fish . Seldom do you find a place nowadays that is not polluted. This problem is growing more difficult every day. We must find a good solution that makes the world a better place to live. Environmental pollution is one of the world’s problems . Vehicles and factories account for air pollution. Waste is usually dumped in the city where many people are living. The sea water is now heavily contaminated by oil spills and industrial sewage. A lot of fish are dying because people kill them for food. At present, there are no unpolluted places in the world. Read and Answer the questions The Earth has volcanoes because it is hot inside. In some places it is hot enough to turn solid rock into liquid rock. Geologists call the liquid rock magma. The magma rises towards the surface because it is less dense than the surrounding rock ( like a hot air balloon rising through the cooler air ). If the magma reaches the surface it is called lava and lava builds up to make a volcano. Volcanoes grow by intrusion and extrusion. An intrusion is magma that moves up into a volcano and then it stops. This way the volcano grows on the inside. An extrusion is an eruption. It can add layers of lava or ash. This way the volcano grows on the outside. *Questions: What does the first paragraph mainly discuss? What does the second paragraph mainly discuss? What is lava? What way does the volcano grow on the inside? What way does the volcano grow on the outside? Which of the following adjectives best describes the tone of the passage? a) frank (adj) ngay thật, thẳng thắn. b) scientific (adj) thuộc khoa học c) ambiguous (adj) thuộc khoa học d) subjective (adj) chủ quan. *some new words: rock (n) đá, khối đá intrusion (n) sự xen vào magma (n) nham thạch surrounding (n) môi trường xung quanh. dense (adj) chặt, khít, khó nhìn qua extrusion (n) sự đẩy ra solid (adj)đặc, rắn tone (n) tiếng, âm thanh, phong cách.
