around the groups and off er guidance. Activity 4: Apart from expressing an opinion on a practice in the past, Ss have to decide whether they would like to keep the practice alive and explain why. Allow Ss some time to read the practices, make their decision, and think of the reasons for their choice. They can then start their discussion. T moves around the class to facilitate the discussions. If something interesting is expressed, T may wish to bring the whole class together to discuss it. * HOMEWORK - Prepare Unit 4 – Lesson 6 => Supplement and experiences after teaching the lesson: .. .. .. Period 38 Teaching date: November 6th 2019 Unit 4: LIFE IN THE PAST Lesson 6: Skills 2 I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - listen for specifi c information about school life in the past - write a description of how children in the past studied without technology II. Language focus: III. Materials: IV. Procedures: Listening Activity 1: Ask Ss to look at the old photo and read the introduction to the listening and the questions. T may even decide to do a prediction task by asking Ss to guess if each statement is true or false before listening. T then plays the recording and Ss tick (v) the answers. T can play the recording at least twice. Elicit the answers from Ss. Ask them to explain their answers. Confirm the answers as a class. * Answer keys: 1.F 2.T 3. T 4. NG 5.F 6. T Activity 2: - Have Ss read the questions first to determine which information they need to fill the blanks. Ss then listen to the recording again and write their answers. T checks the answers as a class. * Answer keys: 1. 15 2.bare-footed 3. maths, history (in any order) 4.strict rules 5.extra classes WRITING Activity 3 Ss may work in groups of three or four. Together they make a list of the facilities they are using for their studies. They then tick the ones they think were not available about twenty years ago. T may have the groups write their lists on board. Leave the list there for 4. Activity 4 Ss work individually, referring to the framework while they are writing. If time allows, T can ask some Ss to share their writing with the class. * Sample writing: It is most likely that students twenty years ago were not able to enjoy the Internet in their studies. That’s why it took them a lot of time, energy, and even money, to do a project that we can now easily complete in one or two days. For example, when being asked to write an assignment about past habits, the students had to go to the library, look for books on the topic, read the books, and hand-write any information that they thought was useful for their assignment. They would also have to meet with some old people and talk to them about the past. At home, they had to hand-write their assignment, possibly with a lot of erasing and rewriting of the first draft. After finishing the draft, they had to write a clean copy on another piece of paper for submission. * HOMEWORK - Prepare Suggest + Ving/ “That” clause => Supplement and experiences after teaching the lesson: .. .. .. Period 39 Teaching date: November 8th 2019 SUGGEST + VING/ “THAT” CLAUSE I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - review suggest + Ving/ “that” clause II. Language focus: III. Materials: IV. Procedures: Grammar A. How to use Suggest 1. Mention an idea, plan, or action for others to consider. He suggested a new coffee shop near the university. [FORMAL] Might I suggest a red wine with your steak, sir? [+ (that)] She suggests (that) he consider the promotion carefully. [+ -ing verb] I suggested going to the cinema. [+ question word] Can you suggest where I should visit in Japan? 2. Express an opinion or feeling without stating it directly or providing specific evidence. [+ (that)] There's no absolute proof, but his behaviors suggest (that) he be a criminal. Does he suggest (that) this shirt do not suit me? His attitude suggested a lack of interest in the job. In everyday English, suggest is a very useful verb. It is often used with noun phrases, "that" clauses, the -ing form of verbs or wh-question word (where, what, etc). B. Formula 1. Suggest + noun phrase (phrase phrase) We can use noun phrases such as suggest's object. "Can you suggest a good hotel in Hanoi? If we want to mention the "recipient of the offer", we use the - to structure. "I really love this app and will suggest it to you. NOT: I suggest you this app ... 2. Suggest + that-clause Suggest that someone do something When you want to tell someone your opinion, or want them to do something. Do not use indirect idioms like me, us, you, etc. After suggest, use that-clause. READ MORE: A clause is a part of a sentence, including its subject and its verb. In a sentence, there will be one or more clauses combined. And that-clause is simply a clause that begins with that conjunctions. Start your sentence now with this structure: "I suggest that ... Next, we need a subject and a verb, because it's a proposition. "I suggest that someone do something ... "Someone" is the subject of the proposition. Following the subject is the verb phrase "do something". REMEMBER: do not use to –infinitive immediately after suggest. Don't say "I suggest to do something". Come up with the following example: I suggest that you memorize sentences instead of grammar rules! Emily suggests that we go out for dinner after the movie. My mom suggested that I get a summer job. Her brother suggests that she study harder than she can get into a good university. Is there something wrong with the verb conjugation, have you noticed? "Her brother suggests that she study harder than she can get into a good university. Why not "she studies"? That is why suggest suggest is different from the rest of verbs in English. If you only need regular communication, you don't need to read the advanced section below. But it will often appear in academic contests like TOEIC, IELTS. ADVANCED: In the above structure, following Suggest is a that-clause. A clause will include the subject and the verb. And the verb in the "that-clause" is called the subjunctive form. You do not need to translate the subjunctive meaning as this is a rare professional word. Just need to understand simple in subjunctive form, the verb is not divided but in the prototype form. Do not add -s or change whether it follows he, she or it. "Her brother suggests that she study harder ... NOT: Her brother suggests that she studies harder ... When using Suggest in the past, we can use should in that-clause. But often only English - English is used, and English - American is not very common. "Her doctor suggested that she should reduce her working hours and take more exercise. TIP: In informal situations, you don't need to include "that" in the sentence. It's still that-clause even though you didn't say or write that in the sentence structure. I suggest you memorize sentences instead of grammar rules! Emily suggests we go out for dinner after the movie. My mom suggested I get a summer job. TIP: If it's in the negative form, you just need to add not immediately before the verb "The teacher suggests we not waste time playing video games after school.” REMEMBER: You suggest that someone do something 3. Suggest + ing-form of a verb Suggest doing something Suggest + Gerund "He suggests seeing Avengers: Endgame instead of Batman!" Remember the note above, do not use to - infinitive after suggest. If you use the verb immediately after suggest, use Gerund. Gerund is formed by adding -ing after the verb. ABROAD: Vietnamese people often read it as Vầu-ing. This is wrong in both reading and grammar. In the phrase "verb-ing", the word "verb" is playing the noun, while "ing" is playing the adjective. So, it should be ing-verb. And one more thing, native speakers don't read /-là / but I-N-G / aɪ en dʒiː / (Dan Hauer) For example: Her brother suggests studying harder than she can get into a good university. My doctor suggests eating less and exercising more. Her family suggested studying in the UK. In a sense, this structure is similar to suggest that someone do something. But no mention of who is doing it, because this is understood in a specific context. 4. Suggest + wh-question word Wh-question word is where, what, who, how, etc. We can use these words following the suggest: Could you suggest where I might be able to buy a nice sweater for Mark? Can anyone suggest how we might attract more people to the next event? Practice I. Supply the correct form of the verbs in brackets 1. I suggest (collect) old books and notebooks. 2.
