1. Past simple : 
a) to be : was/ were 
b) regular and irregular verbs: 
(+) S + V-ed/ V2
 (-) S + didn’t + V1.
(?) Did + S + V1? à Yes, S + did.
 à No, S + didn’t 
Use: We use past simple for an action that started and finished in the past. 
 We often use specific time expressions: 
 Yesterday, last month, two years ago,  
2. Present perfect: 
(+) S + have/ has + past participle. 
(-) S + haven’t/ hasn’t + past participle. 
(?) Have/ Has + S + past participle? 
à Yes, S + have/ has. 
à No, S + haven’t/ hasn’t. 
Use: We use the present perfect for an action that happened some time before now. The exact time is not important. 
 We often use: ever, never, so far = up to now, several times = many times, recently = lately, since + a point of time, for + a period of time, just, already, yet
