Objectives: by the end of the lesson - Languages: Ss will be able to + use certain vocabulary items related to hobbies + gain more knowledge about some hobbies - Skills: Ss will be able to: + develop the skill of guessing meaning of the words based on the context + improve reading skill such as skimming to get the main idea of each paragraph and scanning for specific information 2. Assumed knowledge: - Ss are familiar with hobbies topic 3. Anticipated problems: - Ss may not know many vocabulary items related to hobbies -> T provides Ss necessity vocabulary. - Ss don’t know how to scan and get specific information -> T should give them instruction 4. Teaching aids: textbook, blackboard, PowerPoint, handouts. 5. Procedures Stages/ Time Teacher Students Lead –in (5 minutes) T divides Ss into 4 groups. T talks about strange hobbies of the famous. T introduces 5 famous celebrities by giving Ss 3 clues. Ss have to guess who she/ he is or What his/her collection is Who is he? This person likes playing with Barbie dolls This is an actor His most commercially successful films are the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Johnny Depp Who is she? This person like collecting daggers This is an actress Her biggest commercial success came with the Disney fantasy Maleficent (2014). Angelina Jolie What is her collection? This collection belongs to Penelope Cruz, an actress in Pirates of the Caribbean This thing is related to clothes It can be hung Show picture. clothes-hanger What is her collection? This collection belongs to Whoopi Goldberg, a talent actress who won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, ect. This thing is made from plastic This thing is very cheap. Show a picture. Plastic accessories Who is he? Do task 1 in 2 minutes and write the answers on the board While reading (15 minutes) Task 2: Questions – answers game T requires Ss to work in pair, read and answer the questions in textbook. (5 minutes) After reading, Ss will play a game. There are 12 numbers, each group will take turn to choose a number and answer the question behinds that number. If Ss have a correct answer, they will receive 2pts; if not, they will receive -1pts and the other group will get the chance. There are 10 questions (8 questions in textbook + 2 extra questions), one bad luck number (-1pts) and one lucky number (+2pts) If Ss can guess background picture +5 points Clue: Name of a hobby Is the writer an accomplished guitarist? No, he isn’t. “I have not been very successful at this” Why does the writer admire his uncle? Because he is an accomplished guitarist and he is good at accompanying people singing with his guitar. How did he collect his fish ? He bought some of them in a shop and collected some others from the rice field near his house. What kind of stamp collector is the writer ? He is not an avid stamp collector. “However, I would no call myself an avid stamp collector” What is the writer’s second hobby ? His second hobby is keeping fish. Where does he collect the stamps? He collects them from discarded envelopes that his relatives and friends give him. Which does the writer get more of, local stamps or foreign stamps? He gets more of local stamps. What does the writer do with the less common stamps and with the common ones? He keeps the less common stamps inside a small album and he usually gives the common ones to others or throws them away if no one wants them. What is Johnny Depp’s unusual hobby?
