Date of planning: 28th February 2010 Unit 12: MUSIC Period: 72 Section A: READING 1. Aim: By the end of the section, students will be able to understand more specific information about music 2. Skill: Guessing meaning in context, scanning for specific information 3. Method: Integrated, mainly communicative 4. Teaching aids: textbook, lesson plan, CD and cassette 5. Do you like music? 2. What kinds of music do you like? 3. What are your favorite bands? BEFORE YOU SPEAK (12 minutes) Task 1 - Instruct students to read and answer the questions about Ha Anh - Let them work in pairs to do the task - Call on some students to give their answers in front of the class - Listen to students and correct mistakes Key: 1. She likes pop music 2. Because it keeps her happy 3. The Backstreet Boys 4. She listens to music all the time WHILE YOU SPEAK: (23 minutes) Task 2 - Instruct Ss to practice the task through the example: Eg: kind of music A: What kind of music do you like? B: I like classical music. A: Why do you like it? B: Because it is relaxing. - Ask students to ask the questions to get information to complete the table in the task 2 in groups - Walk round and help them - Ask some groups to stand up to practice speaking loudly and complete the table - Listen and correct mistakes Task 3 - Instruct Ss to practice task 3 through the example Eg: + Both B and C like classical music. What song do all students always sing on every Monday morning under national flag? 2. Do you know who the composer was? BEFORE YOU LISTEN: (7 minutes) - Instruct Ss to say about Van Cao in the picture in pairs - Walk round, listen and help students - Ask Ss to find the given songs by Van Cao - Ask Ss to listen to teacher and repeat then read loudly the words sweet and gentle rousing exciting boring lyrical solemn - Listen and check pronunciation WHILE YOU LISTEN (20 minutes) Task 1 - Instruct Ss to do the listening by asking students to read 5 statements and to guess the contend of the listening - Explain some words or phrases which students can’t understand - Ask students to listen to the CD twice and do task 1 - Correct the answers by letting Ss listen to the cues of their answers - Key: 1F 2F 3T 4F 5F Task 2 - Ask students to look through the questions - Ask students to listen to the CD again and to answer them - Help Ss find right answers by letting them listen to the cues of the answers Key: 1. Do you know Van Cao? 2. Who was he? 3. When was he born? 4. What is his place of birth? 5. What were his major achievements? 6. When did he die? - Introduce the section D BEFORE YOU WRITE (10 minutes) Task 1 - Instruct Ss to do the task and explain some new words - Ask Ss to complete the sentences in pairs - Call on 6 students to complete 6 sentences - Walk around and help students to write well - Check and correct Ss’ answers Key 1. He learnt to play music when he was very young. 2. Scott learnt to play the works of composers like Bach, Beethoven and Mozart as well as learnt to compose music 3. He quickly became famous 4.his tunes were wonderful mixture of classical European and African beats which were known as Ragtime 5.All in all, he wrote 50 piano rags and was called the King of Ragtime 6. Scott Joplin died in 1917 WHILE YOU WRITE (20 minutes) Task 2 Write about the life story of Van Cao, using the prompts below. - Introduce and instruct Ss to write a profile - Let students do the task 2 individually and ask a student to write their writing on board - Walk round and help students - Check the profile on board and correct it Key: Van Cao was born on Nov 15th 1923 in Nam Dinh, from a family of poor workers. He started to compose music when he was very young. He wrote the first song in 1939 and it quickly became famous Tien Quan Ca (National Anthem) in 1944. He was not only famous for songs but also famous for poems and paintings. He died on 10th July in 1995. He is known as a very talented musician and highly appreciated by the Vietnamese people. AFTER YOU WRITE (7 minutes) - Give suggestions - Ask students to read their profile - Correct mistakes HOMEWORK (2 minutes) - Ask students to review the task 1 and task 2 in the section D and then prepare section E: Language Focus - Reply freely - Look at the prompts in the task and listen to teacher - Do the task in pairs - Go to board to write in turns - Check their answers - Listen to teacher - Work individually and one of them go to board to write the profile - Check their profile - Listen to teacher - Some students read loudly their products in front of the class - Listen to the teacher and write down homework Date of planning: 7th March 2010 Unit 12: MUSIC Period: 76 Section E: LANGUAGE FOCUS 1. Aim: By the end of the section, students will be able to - Pronounce 2 sounds /s/ - /z/ in words and sentences correctly - Understand how to use “to +infinitive” correctly to express purpose - Make Wh-questions appropriately 2. Skills: - Pronounce the sounds: /s/-/z/ 3. Method: Integrated, mainly communicative 4. Teaching aids: textbook, lesson plan, CD and cassette 5. Procedure: - Class Organization: (1m’) 10A1: absence: 10A2: absence: 10A4: absence: 10C1: absence: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities WARM UP (5 minutes) - Ask Ss to work in groups to give the words with the sounds /s/ and /z/ during 1 minute - Call on 3 random groups to write them on board during 30 seconds - Check the given words on board and note Ss when to pronounce /s/ or /z/ PRONUNCIATION (12 minutes) - Ask students to look at the words and sentences in the part then listen to the CD and repeat twice - Let Ss practice themselves for 2 minutes - Call on 3 - 4 students to speak out some of the sentences - Correct pronunciation for the students GRAMMAR (25 minutes) 1. “to + infinitive to express purposes - Write 2 sentences on the board and underline the “to+ infinitive” + She gets up early to cook breakfast for her family + I listen to classical music to feel relaxed - Ask students to comment on the use of “to+ infinitive” in these examples - Help students understand that the use of “to+ infinitive” is to express purposes, it usually stands at the beginning or at the end of sentences -Ask 3 - 5 students to give some similar examples - Introduce exercises to the students Exercise 1: - Instruct Ss how to do the exercise What ... for? để làm gì - Let them work in pairs for 2 minutes - Walk round - Call on 5 Ss to give 5 answers - Check and give remark Key 1. WH-questions - Ask Ss about Wh-questions - Ask Ss to give questions with WH E.g. Where are they going? When do you often listen to music? - Notice Ss some things when to make WH-questions: Khi đặt câu hỏi có từ để hỏi ta cần xác định: + Từ để hỏi: what, who(m), where, when, why, how... + Động từ chính: to be hay modals (can/could, will/would ) đặt trước chủ từ. Còn động từ thường thì phải mượn trợ động từ tuỳ theo thì của chúng - Ask Ss to do Ex 3 Exercise 3 - Instruct Ss to do the exercise through the example: E.g.
