CONNECTIVES / CONNECTORS (Từ nối) : AND, BUT, OR ( hoặc / hay; “or else” nếu không ), so ( do đó, vì thế ), THEREFORE (do đó), HOWEVER (tuy nhiên)
Những từ nối : AND, OR, BUT, SO: được dùng nối hai từ, hai cụm từ hay hai mệnh đề cùng loại, chức năng hay cấu trúc .
1. AND : dùng thêm thông tin bổ sung (additional ideas),
e.g.: This appliance is modern and economical. (adj. + adj).
His father is a doctor and he works in a hospital. (clause + clause)
2. OR : diễn tả sự chọn lựa.
e.g.: Do you study Maths or Chemistry? (Bạn học toán hay lý)
Does he live in the city centre or in the suburbs?
(Anh ấy sống ở trung tâm thành phố hay ở ngoại ô?)
* OR ELSE ( nếu không) : diễn tả điều kiện,
e.g.: You hurry or (else) you'll be late for the bus?
(Bạn nhanh lên nếu không bạn sẽ trễ xe buýt.)
3. BUT : nối hai ý tương phản nhau,
e.g.: He’s fat but his brother isn't.
(Anh ấy mập nhưng anh của anh ấy thì không.)
That man is famous but humble.
(Người đàn ông đó nổi tiếng nhưng khiêm tốn.)
4. SO (vì thế, do đó) : diễn tả hậu quả.
e.g.: He’s busy, so he can’t help you.
(Anh ấy bận, nên không giúp anh được.)
The test was easy, so most of the pupils could do it.
(Bài thi dễ, do đó đa số học sinh làm được.)
5. THEREFORE - HOWEVER : trạng từ (adverbs).
*THEREFORE (do đó, vì thế) : đồng nghĩa với so, chỉ hậu quả
e.g.: He’s busy ; therefore he can’t help you.
(Anh ấy bận; nên anh ấy không thể giúp bạn được.)
He's at a meeting now; therefore he can’t answer your phone.
He’s busy. Therefore he can’t help you.
He’s busy. He, therefore, can’t help you.
Chú ỷ: THEREFORE có thể theo sau dấu phẩy (,) (a comma), dấu chấm phẩy (;) (a semi-colon) hoặc dấu chấm câu (a period) hoặc sau chủ từ.
*HOWEVER (tuy nhiên): diễn tả sự tương phản, đồng nghĩa với BUT nhưng luôn luôn nối liền hai mệnh đề.
e.g.: He’s over seventy; however, he's still active.
(Ông ấy trên 70, tuy nhiên ông còn linh hoạt.)
It’s raining hard; the game is , however, going on.
(Trời đang mưa to; tuy nhiên trận đấu vẫn tiếp tục)
B PHRASAL VERBS (Động từ kép - động từ có nhiều từ).
Động từ kép (Phrasal verbs) là động từ được cấu tạo bởi một động từ (a verb) với một giới từ (a preposition) hay cả hai (tiểu từ + giới từ) : give up, turn on , look after, get along with. . 
- You should turn off the lights before leaving home.(Bạn nên tắt đèn trước khi rời khỏi nhà.)
- He’s trying on a jacket. (Anh ấy đang mặc áo khoác.)
- He gave smoking up. (Anh ấy bỏ hút thuốc.)
- The light is on. Turn it off. (Đèn cháy. Tắt nó đi.)
