I- Phương pháp làm bài tập
*. Bài tập dạng kết hợp câu
Bước 1: Xác định câu nào sẽ là mệnh đề chính, câu nào là mệnh đề phụ.
Bước 2: Xác định cặp từ trong hai câu có nghĩa tương đồng.
Bước 3: Xác định chức năng của từ trùng trong mệnh đề phụ.
Bước 4: Thay thế từ trùng bằng một đại từ quan hệ tương ứng và đặt ở đầu mệnh đề nếu là whose thỡ phải chuyển cả danh từ đứng sau đi kèm (Mệnh đề phụ trở thành mệnh đề quan hệ).
Bước 5: Viết mệnh đề quan hệ sau ngay danh từ có nghĩa tương đồng của mệnh đề chính (tiền ngữ) và hoàn thành câu.
Chỳ ý: Nếu tiền ngữ là danh từ xácc định thì phải dựng mệnh đề không xác định tức là phải dùng dấu phẩy.
- Nếu whom và which là tân ngữ của giới từ thì có thể chuyển giới từ ra trước whom và which.
Ví dụ: Kết hợp câu sử dụng mệnh đề quan hệ ( Combine these sentences)
1. The girl is very pretty. She lives oppsite my house.
+ “The girl is very pretty” mệnh đề chính; “She lives oppsite my house” mệnh đề phụ. 
+ The girl và she là hai cặp từ tương đồng. 
+ She giữ chức năng là chủ ngữ.
+ She được thay thế bằng who và ta có mệnh đề quan hệ “who lives opposite my house”.
+ Chuyển mệnh đề quan hệ ra sau tiền ngữ và hoàn thành câu: 
The girl who lives opposite my house is very pretty.

A. Lý thuyết: 
a, RELATIVE CLAUSE REPLACED BY PARTICIPLES AND INFINITIVE.
 1.Replaced by present participle (V-ing): khi động từ trong mệnh đề quan hệ được dung ở dạng chủ động. 
 Ex: This is the man who helped me last night.
This is the man helping me last night.
2.Replaced by past participle (V3/ Ved) : khi động từ trong mệnh đề quan hệ được dung ở dạng bị động.
 Ex: This is the house which was built 20 years ago.
This is the house built 20 years ago.
 3.Replaced by to- infinitive (to -Infinitive): khi trong mệnh đề chính có các trường hợp như sau: 
 (The first, the second, the third, the only, the last, the + so sánh nhất của tính từ + N)
 Ex: This is the only man who entered this room.
 This is the only man to enter this room.
b. THE OMMISION OF RELATIVE PRONOUNS.
 	Đại từ quan hệ có thể lượt bỏ đi nếu nó có vài trò làm tân ngữ trong mệnh đề quan hệ mà trước nó không có giới từ.
c. Phương pháp làm bài tập:.
* Bài tập dạng rút gọn
+ Bước 1: Xác định mệnh đề quan hệ (mệnh đề thường bắt đầu bằng who, which, that).
+ Bước 2: Bước này chủ yếu là giảm từ mệnh đề xuống cụm từ, tuy nhiên cách suy luận cũng phải theo thứ tự nếu không sẽ làm sai.
Yêu cầu học sinh lần lượt làm theo các bước sau:
- Nếu mệnh đề có công thức S + BE + CỤM DANH TỪ thỡ rỳt gọn thành danh từ
- Nếu trước who which... có các dấu hiệu first, onlyvv thỡ rỳt gọn thành to inf. ), lưu ý thờm xem 2 chủ từ cú khỏc nhau khụng (để dùng for sb) hoặc mệnh quan hệ mà diễn tả mục đích hay nhiệm vụ cũng rút gọn thành to infinitive.
- Nếu mệnh đề đó chủ động thì rút gọn thành v-ing. Mệnh đề bị động thì rút gọn thành V3/Ved.
Vớ dụ: This is the first man who was arrested by police yesterday.
Mới nhìnn ta thấy đây là câu bị động, nếu vội vàng thì sẽ dễ dàng biến nó thành: This is the first man arrested by police yesterday sai.
Thật ra đáp án là: This is the first man to be arrested by police yesterday. 
*. Bài tập dạng điền đại từ quan hệ thích hợp vào chỗ trống
+ Bước 1: Xác định tiền ngữ là người hay vật ...
+ Bước 2: Xác định chức năng của đại từ quan hệ : chủ ngữ hay tân ngữ, sở hữu 
+ Chọn đại từ quan hệ điền vào 
EX 1: Use reduced relative clauses in place of the relative clauses

=>Dalat, best known for foreign travellers, has pleasant weather.
2) Animals that are born in a zoo generally adjust to captivity better than those that are captured in the wild.
=>Animals born in a zoo generally adjust to captivity better than those captured in the wild.
3) Few tourists ever see a jaguar, which is a spotted wild cat that is native to tropical America.
=>Few tourists ever see a jaguar, a spotted wild cat that is native to tropical America.
4) She is the only woman who was appointed to the board.
=>She is the only woman to be appointed to the board.
*5) The floor is dusty but I haven't got a brush with which I can sweep it.
=>The floor is dusty but I haven't got a brush to sweep it with.
6) A person who serves in a shop is called a shop assistant
=>The person serving in a shop is called a shop assistant
7) John, who is my friend, has studied English for ten years.
=>John, my friend, has studied English for ten years.
8) There are many exercises that we have to finish before school.
=>There are many exercises for us to finish before school.
9) The mistakes which you have to correct are very important.
=>The mistakes for you to correct are very important.

I. Giới từ đi với Mệnh đề quan hệ: 
 -Chỉ có hai đại từ quan hệ là Whom và which thường có giới từ đi kèm và giới từ có thể đứng trước các đại từ quan hệ hoặc cuối mệnh đề quan hệ.
Eg1 The man about whom you are talkingis my brother.
The man (whom) you are talking about is my brother.
 Eg2The picture at which you are looking is very expensive.
The picture ( which) you are looking at is very expensive.	
Chú ý:-Khi giới từ đứng cuối mệnh đề quan hệ thì ta có thể bỏ đại từ quan hệ và có thể dùng that thay cho whom và which trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định.
-Khi giới từ đứng trước đại từ quan hệ thì ta có không thể bỏ đại từ quan hệ và có không thể dùng that thay cho whom và which .
 Ex 1: Use a Relative pronoun preceded by a preposition to combine each pair of sentences below:

a) Chúng ta sử dụng can (do) để chỉ một việc gỡ đó là khả dĩ hay một người nào đó có khả năng làm một việc gỡ đó. Thể phủ định là can’t (can not).
- You can see the sea from our bedroom window.
Be able to có thể được sử dụng thay thế cho can, nhưng can thì thường gặp hơn.
- Are you able to speak any foreign languages?Anh nói được ngoại ngữ nào không?
