ARTICLES
a/ an – the
INDEFINITE ARTICLE “A/ AN” ( mạo từ bất định a/an)- không chỉ rõ người nào hoặc vật nào.
dùng trước danh từ đếm được số ít. ( a cat, a teacher)
dùng trước một nghề nghiệp. ( a farmer, an accountant)
dùng trước danh từ xuất hiện lần đầu tiên trong câu.
“a” dùng trước một phụ âm. ( a house, a car)
“an” dùng trước một nguyên âm – a, o, e, u, i -hoặc h câm.( an apple, an hour) (ngoại lệ: a unit, a union, a uniform, a university)
DEFINITE ARTICLE “THE” ( mạo từ xác định”the”)- chỉ rõ người nào hoặc vật nào mà người nói và người nghe đều biết đến.
dùng trước danh từ không đếm được; danh từ số ít hoặc số nhiều. (the water, the pollution, the people, the child, the children)
dùng trước danh từ chỉ người / vật duy nhất. ( the Sun, the Earth, the Moon, the sky, the ground)
dùng trước danh từ xuất hiện lần thứ hai trong câu.
dùng trước tên các vùng/ khu vực đã nổi tiếng về mặt địa lý hoặc lịch sử. (The Sahara (desert))
dùng trước tên sông, biển, đại dương, kênh đào, dãy núi, quần đảo.
( the Mekong River, The Nile, the Atlantic, the Suez Canal, the Andes, the Hawaiian Islands)
dùng trước tên một số quốc gia, thường là khi tên quốc gia đó gồm tập hợp nhiều từ hoặc có ý nghĩa số nhiều. ( the United Kingdom, the United States, the Philippines, the Czech Republic)
NOTES: KHÔNG ĐƯỢC DÙNG “ the” :
trước tên quốc gia (Vietnam, France), thành phố(London, Paris), châu lục (Asian, Europe), một ngọn núi ( Mount Everest), hoặc một hòn đảo (Phu Quoc Island).
trước các môn thể thao( football, tennis), các môn học( maths, English), các bữa ăn (breakfast, lunch, dinner), thứ trong tuần (Monday,Sunday).
Note : pronounce the as [ði:] before a vowel (nguyên âm – a, o, e, u, i)
