UNIT TWELVE: OUR FREE-TIME ACTIVITIES
Lesson 2: Period 1 (part 1 and 2)
(Class: 5A, 5C, 5B, 5D)
I. Overview:
1. OBJECTIVES: 
-By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to pronounce correctly the sounds of the letters aw as in draw and those of the letters ar as in star and to listen and read together correctly.
2. LANGUAGE FOCUS:
a. Phonics: draw, star.
b. Vocabulary:
+strawberry, starfruit, car race, channel.
3. TEACHING AIDS:
- Student Book : Tieng Anh 5, Unit 12, Page 15.
- Audio and visual aids: Recordings, flashcards, a large-sized sheet of paper for phonic .

I. Warm-up: 
- Play the game “Slap the cards” (with the words go fishing, go shopping, read book, listen to music, play sport)
II. New lesson:
1. Listen and repeat.
- Have pupils to open their books on page 15.
- Stick the large- sized sheet of paper with this section written on it on the board.
- Tell pupils they are going to learn how to produce the sounds of the letters aw as in draw and those of the letters ar as in star.
- Ask pupils to repeat draw, star .
- Play the recording twice. 
- Guide Ss practice reading draw, star.
- Call on some Ss say the words in front of the class. T correct mistake(s).
- Have whole class read aloud the words.
 2. Listen and read together.
Before listening:
- Have pupils look at pictures in part 2. Ask Ss to read the dialogue.Tell them about the activitiy.
-Read the dialogue, pausing at times to check students’ comprehension.
- Teach the key words: strawberry, starfruit, car race, channel. Write the words on the board and get Ss to repeat them a few times.
- Say You are going to hear the dialogue and clap the words: one clap for the words with “aw” as in “draw”, “strawberies” and two claps for the words with”ar” as in “star”, “ car”.
- Model: read the poem, clapping: draw (one clap), strawberies( one clap), star ( 2 claps) car ( 2 claps), Group the words into two columns on the board corresponding to the number of claps.
- Get Ss to clap in the same way as you read the dialogue again.
- Then ask Ss to repeat each line of the chant.
- While listening:
- Play the recording.
- Play the recording again for Ss to clap at the focused words.
After listening:
- Have Ss work in groups read the passage and clap their hands.
- Feed back: Call out some groups read the dialogues in front of the class. T give remark and correct mistake(s).
 III. Follow-up:
- Have pupils repeat the chant once more clap at the focused words.

2. LANGUAGE FOCUS:
- Vocabulary:
+ prawn, claw, paw, law, bar.
3. TEACHING AIDS:
- Student Book : Tieng Anh 5, Unit12, Page 15,16.
- Audio and visual aids: Recordings, flashcards.

I. Warm up: 
- Have pupils listen the song “If You’re Happy and You Know It” Page 16, Lesson 2.
II. New lesson:
3. Group and say aloud.
- Have pupils to open their book on page 15. Get Ss to read the instruction, the chart and the word box .Check if Ss understand the activities and the meaning of the focus words. Recall the meaning of the words: prawn, claw, paw, law, bar.Say each word and get Ss to repeat a few times. Ask Ss to guess all the complete words . Do the first example with the class. 
- Set time and let Ss do the task independently ( in five minutes).
- Let pupils check their answers in pairs.
- Call on some pupils to report answers and the others give comments.
Answer:

- Have the whole class read in chorus all the words in each column to reinforce their pronunciation.
4. Listen and circle:
- Get Ss to open their books on page 16. Tell them the purpose of listening: You are going to hear Kate, Paul, Susan and John talk about their free time activities. You should listen select and circle the appropriate answer.
- Get Ss to read the incomplete statements and guess the answes before they listen. Check their comprehension of the texts.
- Play the recording twice: once for Ss to listen all the way through and once for them to do the task. Pause after each part to give Ss sufficient time to select and circle.
- Replay the recording for Ss to check their answers.
- Get Ss to check their answers in pairs. Call on a few Ss to report their answers to the class. If there is disagreement on any answer, play the related part of the recording again.

- Ask Ss to open their books on page 16 and look at the song. Check pupils’ comprehension of the lyrics.
- Play the recording three times: once for Ss to listen all the way through and once for them to repeat each line a few times; and once for SS to sing along the music.
- Ss practise singing in groups, doing actions.
- Call on a few groups to sing the song in front of the class. The rest of the class claps the beats.
- Have all class singing the song.

II. New lesson:
1. Look listen and repeat.
- Have pupils to open their books on page 17 and look at the pictures. Point to each picture to elicit the names of the characters in each picture and the location. Set the context: Tony is telling Mai about his holiday in Nha Trang. Read the line in the speech bubbles stop at times to check students’ comprehension.
- Play the recording for pupils to listen all the way through.
- Play the recording twice again for pupils to repeat sentence by sentence.
- Divide the class into two groups to take turns to say the lines in each picture. 
- Play the recording again for pupils to repeat to reinforce their pronunciation.
- Feed back.
2. Point, ask and answer.
- Ask Ss to read the example and elicit their prompts to complete the speech bubbles.
- Write the questions and the answer on the board and get Ss to repeat them a few times.
+ What did you do in Nha Trang? – First, I went to Tri Nguyen Aquarium. Then I visieted Vinpearl Land.
- Model the task with the whole class. Point to the picture a and ask: What did you do in Ha Noi? Class: First, I visited Hoan Kiem Lake. Then I saw One-Pillared Pagoda. Repeat the step a few times. 
- Call some open pairs to repeat the step with the rest of the pictures. 
- Have pupils practise in pairs take turns to point, express and respond to wishes.
- Monitor the activity, check the pronunciation and offer help when necessary.
- Feedback.
- Call on some pairs to perform the task in front of the class using real things or pictures. Praise if the pair has a good performance of pronunciation or language usage.
- Have the whole class repeat all the phrases in chorus to reinforce their pronunciation.

- Have pupils open the Student’s book on Page 18 Set the context, using the map of Singapore and the pictures in the reading passage. Teach vocabulary, using the pictures related: resort, famous, Common Services Tunnel, Sentosa, Chinatown, Marina Bay, Jurong Bird Park. Write the key words on the board and get Ss to repeat a few times.
- Read the passage, pausing at times to check
 students’ comprehension. Tell Ss about tast a: 
They are to observe the pictures provided to get 
information and scan the passage quickly to find 
the information related in order to number the 
pictures in the order.
- Have Ss work individually in five minutes read and do the task. Move around to monitor the activity.
