1. Defining Relative Clauses (Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định)
Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định được dùng để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ đi trước nó, tức là làm chức năng định ngữ (không thể bỏ được). Chúng xác định người, vật, sự việc đang được nói đến là ai, cái nào, điều nàoMệnh đề quan hệ luôn đứng ngay sau danh từ mà nó bổ nghĩa.
- We ‘re looking for someone who we can tell the truth.
- These are the children that I looked after last summer.
Chú ý:
- Dấu phẩy không được dùng trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định.
- Không thể bỏ được mệnh đề quan hệ trong câu vì như thế làm nghĩa của câu không đủ,
không rõ ràng.
- Đại từ quan hệ trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định đóng vai trò là tân ngữ có thể lược bỏ.
Ex: The house (which) I am going to buy is not large.
2. Non-defining Relative Clauses (Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định)
Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định được dùng để bổ nghĩa cho 1 danh từ hoặc mệnh đề được đề cập đến ở trước trong câu. Nó bổ sung thêm thông tin thêm về người, về sự vật, một hiện tượng đang được nói đến. Mệnh đề quan hệ luôn đứng ngay sau danh từ, mệnh đề mà nó bổ nghĩa.
Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định không phải là thành phần cốt yếu của câu và có thể loại bỏ mà không ảnh hưởng gì đến câu.
Khác với mệnh đề quan hệ xác định, mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định được phân cách
bằng dấu phẩy và không thể bỏ đại từ quan hệ.
Ex:. - That car, which I bought ten years ago, is still good.
       - She passed the examination, which makes me surprised.
Chú ý:
- That không được dùng trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định.
- Đại từ quan hệ đóng vai trò làm tân ngữ trong mệnh đề quan hệ thì không bỏ được
Ex:  His proposal, which the committee is considering, is related to exams system.
