Aims: - To give students information about the environment problems. - To develop students’ skills. II. Objectives: - By the end of the lesson, students will be able to do something to protect the environment and save natural resources. III. Ways of working: T-WC, group work, pair work, individual work. IV. Materials: Textbook, tape,poster V. Anticipated problems: VI. Teaching steps: 1.Warm up: (5 minutes) * Teacher greets and checks the students’ attendance. * Discussion: - Students discuss the way to reduce the amount of garbage we produce everyday. (Students may talk in Vietnamese) E.g. - Tree leaves to wrap things - Use papers to make toys. - Garbage to make fertilizer. - Vegetable matter to make animal food. T. introduces new lesson 2. New lesson: STAGES T & SS’ ACTIVITIES THE CONTENT ON BOARD PRE- READING (12 minutes) * Pre-teach: - Teacher uses techniques to teach students new words. - Checking understanding: ROR * Set the scene: A representative from Friends of the Earth, Miss Blake, is talking to the students of Quang Trung School. Friends of the Earth shows people how to protect the environment and save natural resources. * T/F predictions: I. Miss Blake asks the students to remember 3 things: reduce, reuse, recycle. 3. “Reduce” means buying the products which are overpackaged. 4.We cannot reuse things like envelopes, glass, plastic bottles, old plastic bags. 5. Miss Blake says that we should use cloth bags and shouldn’t use plastic bags at all. 6. Recycling means not just throwing things away but trying and finding another use for them. WHILE- READING (16 minutes) - Students listen and then read the dialogue to check their predictions. Ask Ss to correct the false statements. - Students practise the dialogue in group 4 and then answer the comprehension questions. III. Reading: 1. We shouldn’t use plastic bags because when we throw them away they could stay very long and could not be self-destroyed / self-demolished. POST- READING (10 minutes) * Discussion: - In group, students discuss the topic “How to protect our environment?” - Students write their ideas on posters into a list. - Teacher hang the students’ posters on board so that students can read other group’s posters. III. Discussion: How to protect our environment? Eg: - use cloth bags instead of plastic bags. - don’t throw things away, try and find another use for them. - recycle old things such as glass, plastic bottles and old plastic bags. 3. Aims: - To help students practice in giving and responding to instructions and listening for specific information about making compost. - To develop students’ skills. II. Objectives: - By the end of the lesson, students will be able to give and respond to instructions. III. Ways of working: T-WC, team work, pair work, individual work. IV. Materials: Textbook, pictures in the textbook, tape, cassette. V. Anticipated problems: The speaking activity may be difficult for some students. VI. Teaching steps: 1. Warm up: (5 minutes) * Teacher greets and checks the students’ attendance. * Kim’s game: - Students look at the picture on page 91 and write the name of things in the picture. Eg: old paper, old bottles, vegetable matter, garbage 2. First of all you must use only vegetable matter, which includes tea leaves, egg shells – but wash the shells first – and tissues. Don’t use any meat or grain products because this attracts rats. b) Where is the best place for a compost heap? Find a place in your garden that gets a few hours of sunlight each day. Use picks or shovels to turn the compost regularly so it gets plenty of air. c) Should you water the compost? The compost also needs moisture, but it will get this from condensation. Cover the heap with a sheet of strong plastic if the weather is very wet. d) How long does it take before you can use the compost? Keep adding to the pile and after about six months, your compost will be ready to use as fertilizer. 3. Summary: (1 minute) - Repeat the lesson. 4.
