UNIT 15: SPACE CONQUEST
B. SPEAKING
I. Objectives: 
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
 + practice asking and answering questions on given information.
 + talk about historical events in the space conquest.
II. Language and skills:
- Language: vocabulary related to space exploration.
- Skills: communicative skills.
III. Methods: Integrated, mainly communicative approach.
 IV. Teaching aids: Textbooks, board, chalk, pictures, laptop, .
V. Procedures:

WARM UP (6 minutes):
 Guessing game: Guessing the name of the picture.
- T prepares a picture and divides class into 2 teams.
- T asks Ss to choose a number at random and answer the corresponding questions. Once the question is correctly answered, one piece of the picture is opened.
- T gives the question:
What is the picture about?
- T give comments and leads Ss into the new lesson
 - Ss listen to the instructions.
- Ss do as what teacher asks.
Expected answers: 
Spacecraft.
PRE-SPEAKING (10 minutes)
T introduces some new words and phrases.
T asks Ss to read aloud the words in chorus and individually.
T asks Ss to copy down the words into their notebook.

A list of verbs that function as auxiliaries:
be (am, are, is, was, were, being, been), can, could, dare, do (does, did), have (has, had, having), may, might, must, need, ought, shall, should, will, would.
- Ss listen and take notes.
-Ss listen to the teacher and say aloud the words.
- Ss copy down the words into the notebook.
WHILE-SPEAKING (23 minutes)
Task 1: Work in groups.
Rearrange these questions and answer them
- T helps Ss read the passage in textbook on page 170 and underline important information to rearrange the questions and answer them.
- T asks Ss to work in groups of 6 Ss in 2 minutes.
- T calls on some Ss to practice in front of the class.
- T gives feedbacks.
Questions:
1. What/ the name/ is/ of/ China’s first manned spacecraft? 
2. What/ of / the astronaut/ the name /is?
3. How/he/ when/ / into space/old/ he / flew/ was?
4. How important/ of China/ flight/ the successful / is? 
5. How many/ independently/ manned space flights/ countries in the world/ have been / able to carry out? What are they?
Task 2: Work in groups.
Ss take turns to talk about the important events in space exploration.
- T teaches Ss how to speak out the dates.
- T reads the example and what students are going to do.
- T asks Ss to read the task to make sure whether they understand the events.
- T divides the Ss into 8 groups. Each group talks about an event given on page 171 of the textbook.
- T calls on some representatives to talk about the events in front of the class.
- T gives comments and feedbacks.
Example: On 4th October, 1957, the USSR launched its first artificial satellite, Sputnik, into space. It marked the beginning of Space Age.

- Group work: Ss read the passage and do the task.
- Ss practice in front of the class.
- Ss listen and answer.
Expected answers:
1. What is the name of China’s first manned spacecraft? 
=> The name of China’s first manned spacecraft is “Shenzhou 5”.
2. What is the name of the astronaut?
=> His name’s Yang Liwei.
3. How old was he when he flew into space?
=> He was 38 years old.
4. How important is the successful flight of China?
=> The successful flight marked a milestone in China’s space project.
5. How many countries in the world have been able to carry out independently manned space flights? What are they?
=> There are 3 countries. They are Russia, The US and China.
- Ss listen to the teacher.
- Ss do as what teacher asks.
- Ss correct the mistakes.
POST-SPEAKING: (5 minutes)
Task 3: individual work 
-T asks Ss choose 3 events in Task 2 and use the information to talk about important events in space explorations.
Ex:
On 4th October, 1957, first satellite- Sputnik marked beginning of Space Age. Then, on 3rd November, 1957, a dog named Laika that was abroad Sputnik 2 became first living being in Space. 4 years later, in 1961, Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut became first human in space.
- T gives comments and feedbacks.
- Ss listen to the teacher.
- Ss work in pairs.
- Ss correct the mistakes.
- Ss discuss and present.
HOMEWORKS: (1 minute)
- T asks Ss to learn by heart the vocabulary.
- T asks Ss to prepare the next part.
- Ss take notes.
- Ss learn by heart the vocabulary.
