OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - Learn how to make and use adverbs of manner. - Do sentence transformation. II. PREPARATIONS: Textbook, pictures, cassette player. III. PROCEDURES: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities 1. Warm - up (7’) - Have Ss name some kinds of sport Some kinds of sports Badminton soccer volleyball Basketball tennis Baseball Swimming table tennis Baseball - Have Ss answer the question: What is your favorite sport? - Name some kinds of sport - Listen and answer the question 2. Presentation (10’) - Ask questions: + What sport is it in the picture? + Do you like swimming? Why? + Where can we go swimming? - Have students read the passage about safety awareness in the swimming pool or on the beach. Read and find the main idea of the passage: What is the main idea of the reading? -Introduce new words or phrases: I. New words: + Safety (adj) + Edge (n) + Awareness (n) + Obey (v) + Flag (n) + Aim (n) + Lifeguard (n) + Be aware of - Listen to the teacher. - Listen and answer. - Listen and write. 3. Practice (16’) Activity 1: - Use substitution drill and let students work on the pictures - Have students practice in pairs - Write 6 pairs of sentences on the board and call some students to underline the adjectives and adverbs in the sentences Activity 2: - Show students a picture about swimming. - Ask them questions about swimming - Let them join in the discussion about this sport - Have them read over the text - Tell them how to do this kind of exercise - Explain some new difficult words - Call some students and ask them to read the text loudly. Presentation (16’) Activity 1: - Ask Ss some questions 1. What sports do you like? 2. Do you like playing table tennis? Activity 2: - Show Ss a picture and ask: What are Nam and ba doing? - Have Ss listen to the tape two times. - Introduce the structure Modal verbs: Can - Must - Have to - Ought to - Might . + Affirmative : S + modal verb + V ( bare ) + Negative : S + modal verb (not or do not ) + V (bare ) (can’t , mustn’t , mightn’t , shouldn’t , oughtn’t to , don’t have to , doesn’t have to ) + Interrogative : Can , Must , Should + S + V (bare ) ? One kind of sports that people can move in the water by using activities of body such as waving hands, waving feet. - Lead to the lesson - Team work. - Listen to the teacher 2. Pre - reading (8’) - Let students observe a picture and guess what sport is it. - Ask some questions to elicit the meaning of the words: New words: scuba-diving pearl diver invention special breathing equipment (with the help of a picture ) vessel explore deep sea Look at the pictures and make a guess. - Listen and answer. Notice the meanings of the given. - Copy down 3. While - reading (15’) Activity 1: - Read over the text and request them to follow attentively. - Ask them questions and check whether their answers are correct or not. What is most of the world’s surface? What did Jacques Cousteau invent? Activity 2: - Request them to pick out the sentences in the text which identify their choice. - Check the answers and correct if there are any mistakes. Most of the world’s surface is land. Before the invention of special breathing equipment, man couldn’t swim freely underwater. Now, scuba-diving is a popular sport. Jacques Cousteau invented special TV cameras. We can learn more about the undersea world thanks to Jacques Cousteau’s invention. - Read sentence by sentence and do the translation - Listen to the teacher and answer the questions - Correct if there are any mistakes - Try to identify one’s choice by picking out the true sentence. - Check the answer and correct if necessary 4.
