Period 17 Unit 4: SCHOOL EDUCATION SYSTEM
 1st Period: Reading
I. Objectives
To help Ss read for specific information about school education system in England.
 To introduce some new words relating to the topic.
II. Materials
Real objects, pictures, English textbook 12.
III. Anticipated problems
Ss may need to be provided vocabulary related to school education system so that they can complete various learning tasks.

1 Warm up: Jumbled words
- Writes the words whose letter are in a random order on the board.
- Devide the class into two teams. Ss from two teams go to the board and write the correct words. 
- The team which writes correct words first will be the winner.

Task 1

Instruction: Find words or phrases in the reading passage which have the following meanings

- T asks Ss to work individually to do the task.
- T asks Ss to exchange their answers with other Ss
- T calls some Ss to explain their choices

Task 2: Questions and answers
Instruction: You are required to answer six questions
- T asks Ss to work individually to do the task, then discuss their answers with their peers.
- T calls on some Ss to give their answers and asks them to explain their choices
- T gives the correct answers.

Schooling is (1).for all English children from the age of 5 to 16. The academic year in English runs from (2)to July and is (3) ..into 3 terms (4)..term is from the beginning of September to mid – December. I. Objectives
To help Ss to get some knowledge of the education system.
To introduce some useful structures related to the topic

III. Anticipated problems
	Ss may not have enough vocabulary to talk about the topic, so T should be ready to provide help.

Warm up:
-T gets Ss to play the game “clap the board “
- T puts some words they learned from the previous lessons on the board. Two representatives of the two teams come up to the board, listen to the teacher giving the words’ definitions and clap the correct word on the board. The team that gets more correct words will win the game ( the words suggested: (curriculumn, core , tuition fees, state school, primary education, secondary education).

Activity 2: 
Puts Ss into groups to practise talking about the school education system in Vietnam. Using the information from task 1.

Gives feedback on what Ss have done and make comments.

Writing about the similarities and differences.
Devides the class into six groups.
Assigns three groups to write the similarities between the school system in Vietnam and England and the other three groups to write about the differences

A: 5 years, from grade 1 to grade 5.
Task 2 Talking about the school education system in Vietnam.
There are three levels of education in Vietnam – pre-school, primary education and secondary education. Children often go to pre-school when they are one year old which is optional. Primary and lower secondary school education are compulsory in Vietnam . Children start to go to primary school at the age of eleven. Children stay in lower secondary school until the age of fourteen when they finish lower secondary school and then they have to take an examination to go to upper secondary school.

Warm up:
- T asks Ss to look at the sentences in their books

Lets Ss listen to the passage again if needed and ask them to answer the questions

- Teacher introduces the task: In about 150 words, write a paragraph on the formal school education system in Vietnam, using the information given in Speaking Tasks on page 47. You may follow the suggestions below: 
- Levels of education: primary (5 years; start from the age of 6); lower secondary (4 years); upper secondary (3 years) 
- Compulsory education: 9 years (primary & lower secondary) 
- The academic year: 35 weeks (9 months, from September to May) 
- School terms: 2 terms: term 1 (Sept - Dec.), term 2 (Jan. - May)

Period 4: Section : Writing
New words
The formal school system in Vietnam consists of two levels of education, primary and secondary education. The children start Grade/ Year 1 at the age of 6 and they normally complete the primary education at the age of 10. They move to lower secondary school to study in Grade 6 when they are eleven years old. They will finish nine-year compulsory education when they complete Grade 9 at the age of 14. The children may go to upper secondary schools if they pass all the subjects tested at the end of Grade 9. They will stay there until they complete Grade 12 at the age of 17. If they want to sit for the entrance exam to universities or colleges they have to take the national examination for GCSE which takes place at the end of Mayor beginning of June. The academic year in Vietnam runs from September to May and is divided into two terms. The first term ends in January with a week holiday and the second term finishes in May before a long summer holiday
